Fernet is an aromatic, herbaceous and bitter spirit made from a number of herbs and spices which vary between different brands. Usually more bitter and less sweet than other Amari, fernets often include rhubarbchamomileand cardamom among others roots, herbs and spices, and are distilled on a base of grape distilled spirits.

Traditionally served as a digestif after a meal, in the modern era fernet is consumed either as an aperitif or digestif. Fernet contains little or no added sugars, as sweetness is thought to impair digestion. It is also commonly served with coffee and espresso, or mixed into coffee and espresso drinks. In Argentina, fernet is often mixed with Coca Cola, but may also be served at room temperature or on the rocks (with ice).
